I made a trip with St Martins School History Department to France “On the trail of Welsh International Rugby Players killed in the First World War”.
On Monday 12th February we left Caerphilly bus station to Dover and I remember it quite well as my parents were waving goodbye, I was laughing at my dad struggling to stand up as I think he was drunk.
The whole trip was fantastic and we visited a lot of museums, monuments, cemetery’s and battlefields. What really moved me though is when I visited Chocques Cemetery.
I remember Mr Ferris (Who I think is the head of history) asking me “Is your cousin Jenna Vaughan” I replied with “Yes” he then said “Did you know your great great grandfather is buried here?”. I knew he was buried somewhere in France but I didn’t think I’d actually see his grave.
I remember walking up to the gravestone after the whole history department that was on this trip went looking to find it, I didn’t know what to think. I felt quite emotional and I didn’t really know what to say. But after the whole experience this made me want to go back and visit that cemetery again while visiting Mametz Wood (Where there is a Welsh Dragon monument) and also other places that I have not yet seen.
I don’t know why it fascinates me so much. It is just so interesting. I have always loved history and I want to go back there very soon.
